This is interesting.
There is a Nina Simone biopic at the Cannes Film Festival.
A lot of people are angry at the fact that Zoe Saldana was chosen to play Simone.
This is is Nina Simone.
This is Zoe Saldana.
Side by side.
Often the biopic does not necessarily cast the actor who looks like the star they are portraying.
Johnny Cash and Joaquin Phoenix.
For that matter, Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash.
This new one coming out about Grace Kelly, also at Cannes and getting deliciously nasty reviews.
Don’t see it.
But as long as the feel of the character they are trying to portray comes through, I can forget that they look nothing like that person. For the most part.
The problem with Nina Simone being played by Saldana is, Saldana had to wear a prothetic nose. Make-up artists also had to darken her skin. Yikes.
People are crying Blackface. It looks like a parody, says India.Arie.
Social media is abuzz: Were there no darker skinned actresses who could have played the role?
Aisha Hinds (I think she would have been great).
In response, Saldana said in an Ocean Drive magazine interview:
“I can’t stop to think about who thinks me to be black enough or not black enough.”
Apparently, she does her own singing and her voice is absolutely marvelous.
I wonder if that is enough.
